San Diego County Prepares for Energy Upgrade California

BPI Energy Auditor Training Made Possible with Utility Funding

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 6, 2010

JTRL Train To Sustain has been contracted to provide job training to local construction professionals seeking BPI certification through funding from SDG&E to create an infrastructure of certified energy auditors.

The program will train participants through hands-on field training and classroom that will enable them to take part in the fast-growing green building industry. With the construction industry hit particularly hard by the downturn in the economy, this program will provide crucial training to upgrade contractor skills and develop a skilled green workforce to provide career advancement and job security and help meet demand in the growing energy efficiency sector.

First round of scheduled classes begin mid-December with a second round scheduled in January. Contractors who complete the training and pass the BPI exams will become BPI Certified Building Analysts. The certification will qualify them to perform energy audits and facilitate utility rebates under the Energy Upgrade California program. Homeowners will benefit from lower utility cost that can save as much as 30-40 percent on their monthly utility bills and improve comfort and indoor air quality and test for combustion safety.

The combination of classroom lectures and hands-on field training provide training participants a comprehensive understanding of the proper procedures and safety measures to lower utility consumption.

JTRL Train to Sustain offers high quality instruction based on the instructors years of field experience performing audits and retrofits. As one of the most active BPI training affiliates in Southern California, JTRL Train to Sustain has been selected for numerous workforce development contracts funded by local, state and federal stimulus dollars, and anticipates additional growth as more communities adopt energy efficiency and sustainable building practices.

Energy Auditing Certification Course Arrives In the San Fernando Valley

The JTRL Train To Sustain Program And Pierce College Collaborate to Provide BPI Energy Auditing Classes to Meet the Demands of the Emerging Green Economy

(Woodland Hills, CA) – Diagnostic energy audits are an important solution to our most pressing issues: reengaging the underemployed with meaningful careers; cutting energy bills while reducing pollution and expanding business opportunities

Despite all the economic and environmental benefits of residential energy efficiency, the current infrastructure has been a major obstacle in providing comprehensive energy audits on a larger scale. The current workforce does not contain enough experienced professionals to address the numbers of new Energy Auditors needed to help retrofit California’s 13 million homes.

“…a shortage of skilled and trained persons is the leading barrier to renewable energy and energy efficiency growth.”  -The National Renewable Energy Lab
The founders of JTRL determined that the only way they would be able to meet the demands of growing residential retrofit programs is to develop a training curriculum to help create a local skilled workforce that is geared towards the employers needs. Pierce College shares this vision and offers career training for a new economy and is on the forefront for providing “green” technology based classes.
This partnership between JTRL and Pierce is designed to bring much needed green job opportunities to the San Fernando Valley.

The Train To Sustain BPI Certification classes will be held on October 18 -29, 2010 at California State University, (CSUN).
“We are very excited to be afforded this opportunity to offer residential energy efficiency training and are deeply appreciative to Pierce for their commitment to sustainability and support towards the development of green jobs,” said Tammy Schwolsky, co-founder of the Train To Sustain program.  “We look forward to providing students with the tools necessary to become competitive in this high growth industry and empower them to become agents of change in our communities.”

Making California homes more energy efficient presents unprecedented economic opportunities for cities, communities, home owners and the local construction industry as these jobs cannot be outsourced to other countries. Green jobs require workers with new and traditional skills. The opportunity to become “upskilled” to take advantage of new technologies is crucial throughout the building trades.

Last night, President Obama whole heartedly supported clean-energy jobs, saying, "the nation that leads the clean energy economy will be the nation that leads the global economy. And America must be that nation." • About $8 billion of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 has been invested into state and local weatherization and energy efficiency programs.
• The United States Department of Energy will partner with state and local governments to put approximately 87,000 Americans to work in the clean energy economy, which will help families save hundreds of dollars per year on their energy bills (DOE).
